On Wednesday, Rhode Island voters completed their Democratic primaries. David Morales won the nomination for Providence mayor. Kim Ahern emerged as the party's choice for Attorney general. Xaykham Khamsyvoravong captured the Lieutenant-governor nomination.

The Mayoral contest featured Morales and Brett Smiley. Voters selected Morales over Smiley. Smiley finished second in the race.

The Attorney-general primary included Kim Ahern, Keith Hoffmann and Joseph Solomon Jr. Ahern received more votes than Hoffmann and Solomon. Hoffmann and Solomon placed behind Ahern.

The Lieutenant-governor primary field comprised Xaykham Khamsyvoravong, Sabina Matos, Susan R. Anderbois and Cynthia Armour Coyne. Khamsyvoravong outpaced Matos, Anderbois and Coyne. Matos, Anderbois and Coyne trailed Khamsyvoravong in the final tally.

Analysis

The three victories deliver a completely new Democratic ticket for the upcoming state elections. With newcomers in the top statewide races, the party will need to shape its campaign narrative around these candidates. Their performance in the general election will depend on how effectively they can mobilize the party base and appeal to independent voters.

David Morales' win in Providence positions him as the city's Democratic standard-bearer. His candidacy will determine the direction of the Mayoral race and could influence local policy debates.

Kim Ahern and Xaykham Khamsyvoravong add fresh faces to the statewide slate, potentially broadening the party's appeal. Nevertheless, the outcome of the general election remains uncertain, and the candidates will face competition from Republican opponents and third-party challengers.
