The Federal Reserve raised its target rate twice in 2026, each move adding 25 basis points. The hikes left the policy rate at 4.25 percent at the close of the year. No rate cuts were implemented during the twelve-month period.

In October, the Fed voted for a 25-basis-point increase, moving the rate from 4.00 to 4.25 percent.

The December meeting resulted in another 25-basis-point rise, again bringing the rate to 4.25 percent. This constituted the second incremental hike of the year.

Throughout 2026 the Fed did not cut rates, confirming a total of zero cuts for the year. The December meeting did not include any reduction. The policy stance remained unchanged after the hikes.

The Fed's lower bound did not fall to 2.75 percent or lower before 2027. This threshold remained above that level as of the year-end. No policy move brought rates down to that range.

Analysis

Two modest hikes suggest the Fed pursued a cautious tightening path, keeping the policy rate at a relatively high level while avoiding abrupt shifts. By raising rates in small increments, the central bank signaled concern over price pressures without over-tightening the financial system.

The absence of any cuts throughout the year indicates that monetary policy stayed restrictive, likely increasing borrowing costs for households and businesses. Higher rates can dampen consumer spending and investment, which may slow overall economic growth if inflation remains elevated.

Keeping the policy rate at 4.25 percent and the lower bound above 2.75 percent limits the room for future easing. With the lower bound still well above the 2.75-percent threshold, the Fed has less flexibility to lower rates quickly should economic conditions improve.

Future policy direction will depend on incoming data on inflation, employment and growth.
