Throughout 2026 China refrained from any large-scale military action against Taiwan. The country neither launched an invasion nor imposed a naval blockade on the island. It also avoided direct armed confrontation with Japanese forces during the same period.

On Tuesday 3 November authorities confirmed that no Chinese forces entered Taiwan before the 2026 midterm elections. The decision was recorded after monitoring of troop movements and diplomatic channels showed no offensive activity.

Maritime traffic continued unimpeded, and commercial vessels passed through the Taiwan Strait without restriction. The absence of a blockade maintained normal trade flows between the island and its partners.

The same day, Friday 1 January, it was recorded that no military clash occurred between Chinese and Japanese forces before 2027. Naval patrols and air operations in the East China Sea proceeded without incident. Both sides kept engagements to routine monitoring activities, avoiding escalation.

Analysis

The lack of an invasion, blockade or direct clash kept the regional security environment relatively stable, allowing Taiwan to maintain its de-facto autonomy and Japan to continue its maritime operations without wartime disruptions. China's restraint removed the immediate risk of a broader conflict that could have drawn in other powers and destabilised East Asian trade routes.

For external actors, the outcomes meant that diplomatic and economic tools remained the primary means of influencing cross-strait relations. The absence of kinetic action reduced the urgency for emergency military deployments by allies, but it also left open the question of how Beijing's strategic goals will be pursued through non-military channels such as economic pressure or political persuasion.

Looking ahead, the settled results do not eliminate uncertainty about future Chinese behavior. While 2026 passed without escalation, the underlying tensions over sovereignty and regional influence persist, and any shift in domestic or international dynamics could alter the calculus that kept China from using force this year.
